I had my first experience with yoga in 1999—with a Dixie Carter VHS tape.
Three years later, I committed to a 3-times-a-week practice…and within three months, I was practicing every single day. (I still do so now.)
As a child and teenager, I participated in gymnastics, dancing, and acrobatics, so body awareness was nothing new to me. However, I had never really done a lot of activity just for the sake of exercise. That day in 1999, when I dug the old VHS tape out of a box of yard sale finds, it was because I decided I needed to purposefully “work out”; I first turned to yoga as a way to get more physical exercise. It quickly became obvious to me that yoga was so much more.
Over the years, yoga has carried me through heartbreak, depression, grief, and physical injury—especially severe digestive ailments that led to crippling back pain, and the death of my dad in 2011.
The summer of 2014 brought a big milestone—my first teacher training at Hot Yoga Midwest. I taught there (and managed the studio) full-time for nearly two years.
In April 2016, I was rear-ended on Highway 40 and suffered a concussion that led to post-concussion syndrome—a personality-altering, life-changing, extremely traumatic injury. I had to quit teaching and focus on healing my brain. Every day brought another terrifying surprise. For months, my yoga practice was the only consistent thing in my life. Post-concussion syndrome was compounded by severe anxiety and PTSD, and depression, which affected myself and those closest to me.
Still altered, but determined to move on, I completed my second teacher training, a trauma-informed curriculum, through Yoga Buzz, in 2016. Since then, I’ve been expanding the scope of my teaching and continue to grow as a teacher and heal and grow personally every single day.
