I have t-shirts at the studio with this saying on the front and our logo on the back. When I first got them, one of the questions I got, besides how much they cost and what sizes we had, was “what does that mean?” I asked the student what she thought it meant and was met with a puzzled look. I began explaining.
Our nature is to define and categorize and label. We like to have things nicely put into boxes. Unfortunately when we do this, there are other meanings that we associate with those categories.
Take the word tree. Immediately we begin to wonder, what type of tree, how tall is the tree, what shape are the leaves… flowers… and then from those associations, we make more associations and begin to label and judge.
Defying definition flips things around to a yogic state of mind, where we hold the judgement in abeyance. It doesn’t matter the color of your skin, your age, your gender, the amount of money in your bank account. It doesn’t matter the diagnosis, the things that happened to you when you were younger. Martin Luther King Jr. said “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” As soon as we start to define and label, we automatically apply other baggage. We will know peace when each of us live and thrive through looking at our actions and not the reflection in the mirror.
I invite you to Defy Definition with me. Every day.
