Today I had options. Too many options. I could have gone to an outdoor yoga event and blissed out in the big wide open under the Arch on my mat on a glorious sunny dry late summer day. I did not and it was all a matter of priorities.
Earlier in the week, my mom emailed my sisters and I. The four of us get together periodically for lunch on weekends to chat. Mom and Dad had recently gotten back from a trip to Russia and she was anxious to share her photos with us and hear how we were doing.
When the email came, I was anxious about lunch on Saturday or Sunday, trying everything within my power to move the lunch onto Saturday, but knew that because of work schedules, that was going to be a losing battle. Lunch was scheduled for Sunday – the same day as the yoga event. And I wasn’t going to get to go.
So I missed asana with about a thousand other people. Oh well. I got to spend time with my mom and sisters. Priorities. It wasn’t a special celebratory lunch, nor at some fancy place – just the local Bread Company – but it was more than that. Events, words, actions have differing meanings, values and weights for different people and at different times.
An event that was just pleasant for me meant a lot more for my mom. My mom who wanted to have daughters and more than one of them because she was raised as an only child. My mom who values each minute she gets to spend with her now grown “girls”. My mom who thanks us for the lunches we have together, even when she insists on paying. Priorities.
