I was recently at a conference and caught up with an old friend, who just happens to be enamored with Bollywood. Bollywood Dancing to be exact.
Bollywood is a portmanteau of Bombay (former name of Mumbai) and Hollywood and refers specifically to the genre of Hindi films, which are now making India the world’s largest producer of film. These films are mostly musical in nature, filled with symbolism, love, romance, forbidden fruits and lots and lots of dancing.
The dancing is also filled with symbolism, gestures, facial expression, lots of movement and stories.
Yoga, for the uninitiated is similar in nature. The poses are symbols of ancient gods; there is loves of movement and stories are evoked through the postures themselves.
And yet, we are born to suffer. As we age, we dwell on the past and fear the future. So many are fixed in the fear of risk and failure that they are stuck in unhappiness and misery.
Yoga and Bollywood dancing to the rescue. Both of these forms of expression (ways of being?) provide a move back to our primal just-born selves.
Yoga allows us to move and breathe and focus merely on movement with breath. How simple. Through using the breath, we let go of the mind and its fixations.
And while, I have yet to take up Bollywood dancing, the appeal of it, I get. Movement, breath, stories; it all adds up to releasing the past and remaining here and now in the present.
The key to happiness is not the complicated mess we try to make it. The key to happiness is simple, usable and relevant. The key to happiness is yoga and Bollywood dancing.
